Michigan "Closing In" on Hiring Kyle Whittingham

And Baylor adds a former NBA draft pick

Merry Christmas, Open for Business readers!

I’m taking a bit of a break this week to celebrate the holidays with my family, so there won’t be a full column today. But I did want to take the time to again tell you how grateful I am for all of you who have supported this endeavor of mine.

I hope you’re all getting to spend plenty of quality time with those closest to you this week.

I also wanted to drop in a few quick Big 12 updates. Even on Christmas, the news doesn’t stop. It looks like former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is going to be the next head coach at Michigan, which is WILD.

What You Need to Know

  • Multiple reports from ESPN, On3, The Athletic, etc. say Michigan is “closing in” on hiring former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. Will he take coaches from Utah and/or BYU with him? Here’s some speculation on that front.

  • Want to know how much it’s going to cost to pay a top-flight quarterback in the transfer portal this year? Check out this guide to the price at every position this offseason.

  • K-State made another very strong hire on head coach Collin Klein’s defensive staff.

  • Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham had the tweet of the week in the conference.

  • Baylor and Utah both made midseason additions to their basketball rosters. The Bears added a former NBA draft pick. Welcome to the weird world of college sports in 2025.
