Big 12 Football Teams Cheating?

And a new #1 in the Big 12 Power Rankings

Big 12 Conference

There’s so much happening in the Big 12 right now. We’ve officially entered crossover season, which means the best basketball league in America is playing exhibition games. I’ll have a Big 12 basketball player anonymous survey coming for you next week! Their pick to win the Big 12 isn’t the traditional power…

Things are wild with football, too. I’m digging into tiebreaker scenarios this week, which look very complicated in the Big 12 and ACC. But we also have…cheating?

Per ESPN, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt raised concerns on Tuesday with league officials about whether coach-to-player helmet communications are accessible to opponents (and others) because they’re not encrypted.

The Big 12 has instructed all teams to send their helmet communications systems back so that they can be encrypted via a software update.

Tech has requested a report from the Big 12 on their recent games against Baylor and TCU to “ensure the integrity of the games weren’t compromised.”

Check out the article for more details. It’s going to be a wild November!

Big 12 Power Rankings

Here are your week ten Big 12 power rankings! Please note: these are rankings, not power ratings. That means they are primarily based on what a team has accomplished so far this year – not necessarily how good I think the team is. You’ll see their ranking from last week in parentheses.

  1. BYU (LW: 2)

  2. Iowa State (LW: 1)

  3. K-State (LW: 3)

  4. Colorado (LW: 4)

  5. Cincinnati (LW: 5)

  6. Arizona State (LW: 6)

  7. TCU (LW: 8)

  8. Texas Tech (LW: 7)

  9. West Virginia (LW: 9)

  10. Baylor (LW: 11)

  11. Houston (LW: 16)

  12. Kansas (LW: 14)

  13. Arizona (LW: 13)

  14. Utah (LW: 10)

  15. UCF (LW: 12)

  16. Oklahoma State (LW: 16)

  • I’m finally giving BYU the nod over Iowa State at number one. Remember that I consider these to be rankings, not power ratings, which means it’s based on merit. The Cougars handled UCF on the road a week after ISU struggled to beat the Knights at home. I was also admittedly influenced by this great stat from one of college football’s best data accounts. BYU also has a better strength of record and strength of schedule than ISU.

  • It’s tough to separate teams five through ten in the power rankings this week. You can make a case for any of those teams to be in the five spot – including Baylor. If the Bears knock down a Hail Mary in Boulder, they’re easily my pick. Results matter, so I won’t do that, but I’m tempted to. I might pick Baylor on a neutral field over all those teams right now.

  • I went with Kansas over Arizona, UCF, and Utah because the Jayhawks have proven capable of blowing out Big 12 competition when they whacked Houston. They also put together an impressive effort in Manhattan before falling late in the fourth quarter yet again.

  • Do picks get any worse than me going with Oklahoma State to win the Big 12 this year? When Mike Gundy said some guys need to do some soul-searching, he was talking about me.
